I tend to think that someone brings this up with their partner because they really, really want to sleep with someone else, they’ve had their eyes in that person for a long time, and it’s the only way to attempt to light the fire without blowing up the whole house. Even if their partner is disgusted they can backpedal. I knew a couple who I’m pretty certain were swingers— very gregarious, no kids (not that having kids is always dealbreaker), both attractive, and lots of nude art on the walls. I liked them but always felt like there was another motive at hand than plain old friendship.
I don't think I would do something like this with friends or people we were otherwise socially connected with. It just seems way too messy with a lot of potential complications.
The wife hinted at something that sounded like a polyamory-type situation. In hindsight, I’d always hear them throwing around lots names, different couples they were friends with and then not friends with. Probably got into it with too many people and abandoned ship when someone felt threatened.
