if he doesn't make the soccer team, he should consider the ultimate frisbee team.  A lot of similar skills and the team has quite a few former soccer players.  The boys' team has both JV and varsity.  Both the boys' varsity (ranked 4th nationally) and the girls (ranked 10th nationally) are going to high school nationals this year!  Also it's a very welcoming team-- lots of beginners, no cuts, and no pre-season practices.  They have fall and spring seasons with both local and travel tournaments, and a winter practice/training season.  [/quote]

Sports is one of the thing that really disappoints me about the mega size of all of the public HS's in the greater DMV. My kid is in upper elementary and very enthusiastic about sports (but definitely not better then average). At my public HS we had a freshman team (that everyone made), JV (that most sophomores and above made) and Varsity (competitive) for most sports -- I was also an average player, and dropped off by Junior year when I wasn't good enough for varsity -- but have so many memories of how fun playing for my school was.

The size disparity makes sports tough in a couple of ways for JR.  It’s tough to make the team, and then conference games are not competitive.

When my kid played freshman basketball at Wilson, they played mostly private schools b/c other DCPS schools couldn’t field freshman teams.  When he played JV, they didn’t lose to a DCPS school, and most games were decided by 30-50 point margins.  No fun for anybody.

Baseball was similar — those kids would win by huge margins against DCPS schools. [/quote]
