You didn't need the glasses during the minute plus of totality. Since DC won't be in the path of totality, if you want to look at the sun and see where the moon is passing by, you definitely need glasses. Also do not try to photograph it without special filters. If you don't have glasses, you can make a projector with a cereal box and some foil or use a colander over some white paper to see the shadow effect.
