My 11 year old good reader has been reading His Dark Materials and likes it a lot. She’s also really enjoying The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate and liked two books I suggested - The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. She’s into animals and really liked “Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance” and, at the recommendation of her teacher, recently read and enjoyed “Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus” which, I believe, is about a girl with no arms.
Calpurnia Tate (2 books) and His Dark Materials and Blackbird Pond were all hits in my house, so I'm going to look for your other recommendations. The cactus recommendation reminded me of a few books dd liked and helped her understand different perspectives: - Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper, book about a fun feisty character with cerebral palsy. Really touching. - Tornado Brain - mystery book where the main character is autistic (I think, not sure if it's ever named). - Miscalculations of Lightning Girl, great main character with some special abilities and quirks after getting hit by lightning and fun story.
I’m the pp who recommended the Cactus book and others. Elizabeth George Speare (Witch of Blackbird Pond) also wrote Calico Captive. At this age I really liked Anne of Green Gables. I read that to my 11 year old about a year ago and she enjoyed it but had no interest in continuing the series. Her teacher recommended The Egypt Game and I loved that when I was younger but haven’t gotten it from the library yet. Her teacher also recommended To Kill a Mockingbird but we read the first few pages together and she felt she’s not ready for it yet. I asked her and she said Cactus wasn’t hard but was funny. She said she really loved Hen and the Art of Maintenace and also (if there’s interest in nonfunctio) she really loved “An immense World”. Right now she’s reading Lily and Jake by Gerry Spenneli. She says it’s not challenging but is fun. She says the Wings of Fire series (which was getting easier / she finished prob a year ago) was her favorite of all time and a lot of her friends like Percy Jackson.
