Electric tea kettle gets a ton of use for hot chocolate or theraflu or whatever
Shower caddy.  Mine like fabric.  Some like plastic
Ziplocs.  Gallon.  Chip clips
Small dish soap.  
One set of towels.  Not a lot of room for extra sheets and towels
Bathrobe for shower or a large enough towel.  Whatever they want.  Let them pick stuff out.
Hanging over the door shoe thing.  Holds a lot of stuff.
Over the door hooks.  Amazon.  Very helpful for raincoats (pack that) etc
3 inch mattress topper is nice if you can do.  A comfortable bed is the best
mattress pad
Usually Twin XL sheets.  Check with school for twin or twin XL
Hangers.  Mine likes thin metal ones that take up less room.  Space is at a premium
Shower shoes/slides
Moccasins or slides or something to lounge around in the dorm
Maybe another seating option like a cheap Costco lounge chair, or an ottoman that has storage inside
Coordinate with roommate about fridge.
Coordinate with roommate about tv if having
Coordinate with roommate about area rug.  Cheap at Aldi, Ikea, Homegoods.  You won't want it coming back home
A couple of plastic utensils/plate/bowls or a few metal, just to have
Two sets of sneakers
A nice outfit - khakis, jacket, tie, shoes - you never know - they have social stuff they're invited to
Roach motels, ant baits
Damp rid.  We got the plastic containers vs the hanging ones
Maybe a stick vacuum if you're feeling generous
Clorox wipes.  
Air purifier if moldy dorm
A door stop as someone suggested is great.  Keeping doors open at first makes it easier to meet people
Desk seat cushion maybe
A couple of plastic storage bins with lids, different sizes, and a couple OXO food storage bins.
Desk hutch topper if appropriate
Huge Britta container got zero use.

It's all great.  Summer before can be anxious for them.  This is a way for them to get invested and excited, thinking of it all
