I hate the take everything out and then organize it approach, because I get so overwhelmed taking everything out and starting to organize that I don’t finish the job, and instead am left with a pile of stuff taken out of where it was before. Instead I set a goal for myself of decluttering one item a day. So I find one thing that I can remove one item every day. Often it is just that one item. But also several times a week I will organize a whole shelf or area because I was inspired by decluttering that one item. But because the goal is just one item, both ways feel like success and it keeps me motivated to continue.
PP with ADHD I love this idea, but after 5 days I know I’d forget to keep doing this. But the take everything out and put it back is also horrible for me. So as I take things out, they either go into definitely trash, most likely trash (DH determines if it can/should be donated) or keep pile. So at the end, all I have to do is put back the stuff I’m going to keep. And if I get interrupted, I can put back the stuff I’m keeping, and I’m not left with a floor full of stuff I haven’t decided on. (Which would haphazardly shoved back in) In keeping with the don’t keep stuff for the person you used to be or want to be. Don’t organize based on the organized person you want to be. I’d loved to have a house filled with neat decorative baskets and everything stored inside. But that’s not me. If I can’t see it, it disappears. So everything goes into clear containers. Doesn’t look as neat, but I can find stuff.
