I thought St Louis was a great place to go to college. It has 2.8 million people, so about the same size as metro Baltimore, and bigger than Pittsburgh, or Austin, or Nashville, or Raleigh Durham. It has a lot of great cultural institutions (art museums, theatre, orchestra) established back when it was one of America's biggest cities, and it has pro sports, and shopping (St Louis has both a Saks and Neimans, which is more than most US cities can say), and affordable restaurants and clubs, and gets good concerts. The metro area has higher educational levels than Pittsburgh, or Charleston and Savannah, or Dallas - there's a reason why so much science and engineering based business comes out of St Louis. University City had charms (and some rougher streets on the other side of Delmar that you'd avoid after dark). And the campus is about three blocks from St Louis' Ritz Carlton, so this notion that WUSTL is in a dangerous neighborhood is kind of silly. As a place to go to college, St Louis is miles better than some of the backwaters and strip mall cities people are constantly talking up here. And, most importantly, i was there to get an education, not to write articles for Conde Nast Traveler. I'm assuming all the "St Louis sucks" comment are coming from the same troll, because I can't believe DMV is as provincial as that loser sounds.
