While I don't think it's highly unusual for a first grader to be reading them I think most don't have the "endurance" quite yet, particularly at the beginning of the year. My now 6yo 1st grader(late birthday) is making his way through them - or I should say we are. He doesn't have any trouble reading them in terms of their level but he also doesn't have the attention span or endurance to do it so we read it together where I read a page and then he reads a page. I don't think he was at this level at the beginning of the year - his reading would have been more "choppy" and slow and the story would be lost. Another series of books that we have found that is on a similar level or maybe slightly lower is "Nate the Great" - we are also reading this series together. [/quote]
