So this is the new GOP ploy...play on the fears of voters and overturn duly elected officials, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in "special election" fees?
I'm a democrat and I'm really frustrated when people "play on the fears of voters" with regard to DC crime. I've lived in the city for almost 15 years and DH has been here for 25 years. We're both fed up. Statistically, it's not good, there is no escaping that the numbers of violent crimes committed are the worst in 20 years. In terms of lived experience, it's worse. It shouldn't be routine to hear gun shots from your home - which has happened several times for me in the past two weeks, especially as I wake up in the middle of the night and the sound echoes from many blocks away. It shouldn't be routine to check on your children because their bedroom is in the back of the house and you heard gunshots in your alley. It shouldn't be routine for your neighbors to have bullets penetrate their walls into their home. It shouldn't be routine to know people personally impacted by gun violence. It shouldn't be routine for people to freely drive unsafely because they have fake tags and there's no enforcement. It shouldn't be routine for people to freely drive unsafely because they live in MD or VA and there's no reciprocity and DC has done very little to try to reach an agreement which should benefit all of us. If the question is rape, the extreme progressives will sympathize profusely with victims. "Believe women." "Don't victim blame - it shouldn't matter what kind of clothes the victim was wearing." "There's no excuse." But when the question is a store experiencing vandalism it's victim blaming for even speaking up (see Beau Thai. See other restaurants that have closed citing crime and progressives hem and haw that it's not related)" It's "here's an air tag for your car" and "make sure to do xyz for safety." When the question is general violence not related to rape it's "it's not as bad as Baltimore" (though it is now). It's "there's no epidemic of violence in DC". "If the question is a mass school shooting that is on the news, the progressives will say "evil is not mental illness" and "hold gun criminals accountable." and "we need better gun laws." But when it's local violent gun crime, especially if committed by someone mentally ill, they were "going through something", it's vocal condemnation of someone who fired their gun and hit someone committing a crime "we don't believe in vigilante justice" but yet there's radio silence about the criminal committing the crime? Yes, we don't believe in vigilante violence, but for crissake, what does it take for DC council to actually CONDEMN criminals when it isn't rape and when it isn't some mass shooting in some other state? The dichotomy is palpable in how our leaders speak about some events and not others, about some criminals and not others. I know that I'm rambling (I'm angry) and my supposed quotes are not exact, but they are the gist of what people are hearing, and yes, DC residents (majority democrat by far) are really fed up. We shouldn't have elected officials who speak up a lot about defending reduced sentences, reducing the police force, vigilante justice, etc. But when our own MPD get shot following up on an animal cruelty offence, radio silence from most of them? When POC are murdered over and over and over again, radio silence about the criminals who commit those crimes? That's not ok!
