The cops I see in Bethesda seem to be very responsive and are out on the streets. Ok, I haven't seen any walking the beat, but they are out in their cars. They don't stand idly by, that's for sure.

But.. I can see why their morale declines because they make the arrests then prosecutors do nothing. MD Juvenile Justice Reform passed in 2022 means much less can be done when it comes to prosecuting juveniles.[/quote]

MCP is down almost 200 officers. There is often times only 1 or 2 officers assigned to the downtown Bethesda area. The entire Bethesda district may only have 8-10 officers from the DC line to Montrose Road.

There are only about two dozen recruits in the academy and there are several times that preparing to retire this year or leave mid career due to uncompetitive pay.

Due to years of substandard pay increments, that have now put MCP below the pay for Howard County and Maryland State police, the staffing issue will require investments that the council may not be willing to make. [/quote]
