DC is in first grade and is not enjoying school. Says a lot is boring/too easy and the day feels very long. DC is way ahead on math and reads fluently and I've seen what DC is bringing home and read the teacher updates. What is the best way to approach the teacher to increase the challenge? I hear you are not supposed to say your child is bored and finds everything too easy. What do you say then if that, in fact, is the truth? Should I be talking to the teacher or the AART? Or both? DC only started in public school recently so I doubt any level 2 services are being provided, but I've also heard that this school doesn't really do much formal differentiation before third grade.
I would start with the teacher. You can refer for level 2 services but the AART isn't going to do much beyond that. Since they just got report cards it is a perfect time to follow up. I used language around challenging the child rather than your child being bored. But if your child is bored the teacher probably notices. If your child has not been identified for level 2 you can parent refer and the school is required to respond in 30 days, at least you would have the identified. Every school is different but we unfortunately we haven't seen any differentiation for level 2 at our school.
Thank you! This helps a lot and I will do as you suggest.
