I (solo) took my two kids to NYC for a couple nights just before Christmas. We stayed in Times Square because we were going to Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center. It was crowded and noisy, as you'd expect, and I was (very) nervous going into it, but it was fine. We took the subway a few times (Harry Potter store, Macy's) and that was fine, too, although we only ever went a couple stops. I work in DC 3x/week and don't leave the office because the area around my office is sketchy now. I felt safer in NYC with police at every intersection, directing traffic, etc. YMMV.
We were there a few days after Christmas and similar. We stayed a couple of blocks from Penn Station so we wouldn't have to haul our stuff far after we got off the train. The biggest change I've noticed is that the whole city smells like pot. It's gross, but my kids didn't really distinguish that smell from the garbage and other bad city smells.
PP you're quoting and yes! I almost wrote that about the pot smell. We walked by several weed shops/dispensaries, and the smell was overpowering, but my kids didn't distinguish it from the general bad city smells. My one kid commented on all the people smoking (cigarettes) in the crowds, which we don't see as much here, especially in crowds, more just standing outside a building here.
