The custodians are paid extra on the weekend BY the community leagues who use the schools. They are paid to show up on time, unlock the door, sit around, and then lock up after the permit and go home. Despite that, our org has recurring issues with custodians not unlocking the doors for our scheduled practices and games. If we don't show up in the first hour of permit use, the custodians lock up and go home (despite being paid for the whole day. We are supposed to get a four hour grace period per county rules, but no one is wiling to enforce it. The schools also frequently cancel community use during the week and don't tell the county, then we show up and our teams can't practice.
We have the same problem with our rec league. We are paying the custodians extra but they don't show up, or they lock up early and leave, or they don't unlock the doors and are hiding in the back of the school. If we have a permit from 6-9, the doors should be unlocked at 6 and locked at 9 per community use rules whether anyone is there or not.
Principal here: I’m sorry that it’s been frustrating for you at times. It’s a problem with multiple layers. The number of openings for custodians across the county this year has been unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Multiple job postings are tagged as “readvertisements.” So you have schools all over that are short-staffed. Layer on top of this the fact that people call out sick for any number of reasons. Sometimes if you’re lucky, you get what’s called a Field Custodian. They’re basically a substitute. They’re great, but they don’t always know the community use schedule. And if you don’t get a Field Custodian, the rest of the evening team is trying to cover for the person who is out. If that person who’s out also happened to be the one that opened the gym, the others on the team might not always remember to take care of that task. As for overtime, they’re only getting overtime on Saturdays, not evenings. People can spout off that they are lazy. I haven’t found that to be the case. Most are hardworking and have second jobs. They don’t know the language as well as you or me. I’ve done everything I think I can do to support our team having someone unlock at the right time. Someone will still forget. And then there are groups that show up 20 minutes early ringing the doorbell repeatedly. Guess who is closest to that doorbell? Me. Don’t even get me started on that. If you’re locked out, call FCPS Security. I’ve been called by them when a team couldn’t get in. Hope this background helps some.
