The AART will likely not reach out. You could contact them in the Fall, or just wait for the meeting. You can also apply for Level II now, or in the Spring for next year. It's just in-class differentiation, though, and seems to just be what teachers do anyway. Some schools use the identifier more than others, it seems.
This is probably a typical question of this forum, but wouldn't applying for level II be a good thing to do so that if the child has gone under the radar but is eligible, then it is on their record that they are receiving LII services? If a child is receiving LII already, how would parents know? From report card or is it anywhere else? Do I ask my child's teacher if there is LII services that might child might be eligible for and whether it's necessary (or useful at all) to formally refer? Or do all these questions go directly to the AART?
You should receive notification from the school if your child is receiving Level II services, all students are supposed to be evaluated in May for Level II and III services in the up coming year. The teacher may be giving higher level work to a child but that wouldn't be noted as Level II services. You can also parent refer for Level II and III services outside the annual evaluation window. It isn't limited to the once a year like Level IV services. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs
Thanks, so if my child started mid-year I could just parent refer after a time if I feel my child may need more challenge? The only thing is that I've read on here that it is so varied in terms of what is actually done at this level, with some schools providing very little differentiation. Does it make sure to first check with the teacher or AART if referral will actually result in any additional services?
I think most AARTs are going to give you the response that teachers are constantly differentiating in the classroom to meet needs of their students. However, this may not actually result in extra instruction, especially in 1st and 2nd grade. I'd start with just talking to the teacher about how they keep kids challenged and what they are seeing in the classroom.
