I’d appreciate any feedback on the boys coaches in the 2008 age group at Arlington, Virginia Union, Bethesda or Potomac? DS has played on both A and B teams so feedback on both level teams is helpful. I’m not looking for commentary on rankings/records. DS has a deep and genuine love of the game and we just want to keep it that way.
i'm not sure why you would consider all of those clubs. You won't be able to play high school soccer and club at the same time.
This is definitely a drawback. It’s the reason he hasn’t considered VA clubs before. He’s been playing varsity and I think it’s great for social reasons though he says he would give it up for a better club experience. Potomac and Bethesda haven’t been returning his messages so he may need to cast a wider net and MoCo seems to be lacking options.
The thing is, if you go to Virginia and play ECNL, you don't have a spring season. I'm not sure when you contacted them; however, everyone should be back in the office this week. Practice restarts this week for both MoCo clubs. I think VA union is the least competitive. Potomac 08 boys lost quite a few players this year to Bethesda and Baltimore Armour. This is Potomac's first year in ECNL. Since some of the Potomac players moved to Bethesda i would assume that they have a lot of players. Unless you are much better than the existing players, i would assume you would make the second or third team for Bethesda. That could also be the same for Potomac. Since Potomac is ECNL you can look at the ECNL website to see how many players they have on the team. Bethesda boys coaches can be also abusive, but generally you only have them for one year and then they rotate. The Potomac coach is new this year. My preference would be for Potomac's top team as opposed to Bethesda's second team who plays in NAL. If you don't get a response from the coach, you can contact the age group coordinator for both clubs. Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. He’s been told Potomac ECNL is not looking for players. I’m curious why you would recommend against Bethesda’s second team?
That's not surprising. The 2008 Potomac ECNL team is fantastic...they were probably why the club was accepted into ECNL this year. I assume that's what the poster meant...that particular Potomac team is much better than the 2008 Bethesda Blue team that plays in NAL. Obviously, if he can get on the Bethesda MLS Next team, that's a different story.
Any club that is turning players away without at least giving them a look is a joke and not worth your time.
Not a joke. Maybe they are saying that they won't give someone false hope. I am not a big fan of NAL. I don't think the competition is as good as ECRL. If that's your only option to go to Bethesda Blue, then try it out. They are just starting the season this week so there's lots of time to play.
These hundreds of alphabet-soup leagues are like handbags. You can either get a functional one that looks decent and does the job, or get luxury designer one that doesn't hold much but says, 'Hey. look at me'
