Most families in Arlington know about the public schools' incredible diversity and look beyond the GreatSchools scores; more so than in Fairfax it seems. Funny how most fairfax posters tell families to avoid Annandale HS at all costs when it has an 8 on GreatSchools, and it has always been very highly ranked. Maybe Annandale and other Fairfax County schools teach more to the test than the Arlington schools?
I would not be surprised if there is more teaching to the test in Fairfax. It's a big system with a more corporate structure. That's not all bad, but it's not all good either. It may also be that Arlington posters weigh the importance of real estate and schools differently. Having elected in many cases to live closer-in, even if their schools initially were not as highly ranked as in Fairfax, they may be inclined to look past mediocre test scores in some instances. Conversely, having elected in many cases to live further out because of the purported quality of the schools, some people in Fairfax may obsess over test scores and rankings more than people in Arlington. Whatever. Is Long Branch the school for Lyon Park? That's one of my favorite areas in Arlington.
