I like the Cathedral of Learning Nationality Rooms now but when I was a kid I wasn't as interested in decor and folk art and architecture.  If headed to Oakland, there's also a botanical garden called Phipps Conservatory up the street from the Cathedral and the Carnegie.

There are also some Colonial-era sites scattered around the Western PA area.  If anyone is a history or military buff that might be interesting.  Some might be on your way from DC if you drive a back route through rural Maryland.

Also in that woodsy area near the PA state border are two Frank Lloyd Wright house museums which might be interesting to some children: Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob.[/quote]
