Or if they say "do you want to go the the XYZ concert with me?" I might say "Let me check my calendar. Do you know how much tickets cost?" If I might otherwise be free but it's out of my budget, I'll say "I wish I could but it's out of my budget this month." Then if their preference is to have company, they're free to say "This will be my treat." We might go back and forth a few times, but if they insist, I'll take the offer or pay part.
