At my daughter's all girls private, she has never been offered a test retake and so far only one teacher has dropped a grade in the class and it was because every single student did horribly. Her grades reflect the hard work she puts in. Public schools allow retakes and many have the 50% rule where if you do nothing at all, you get nothing below a 50 on a test or assignment. Also, at MCPS, a student can get an A for the semester if they get a 79 in one quarter and 89 in other quarter. So not one grade is actually an A, but the student gets an A on the transcript.[/quote]
