FWIW, we have played a few SYC pre-MLSNext teams and they can play possession soccer and win playing that way, although closer games. I wonder if they just stop doing that once they get to MLSNext levels. Which is unfortunate. They have a some good kids with physical advantages and it’s a shame if those kids don’t continue to develop their individual skills by playing games that uses those skills.
The "physicality" statements are a bit embellished. There are obvious sequences of SYC using tactical possession play and technical ball movements.
Disagree with first sentence, SYC teams often play up and they are always the same size as their opponents. Agree with second statement. They should have done more of that.
OK. Can we stop saying their teams play up when discussing MLS Next, but because pretty obviously they do not. The 2009 team is 2009s. The 2010 team, if they have players playing up, are really big and physically imposing at multiple spots on the field (though there are certainly smaller players who are very skilled on that team as well). There is nothing wrong with having early growers on a team, but it is pretty silly to say they often play up and are always the same size as their opponents. I would be very surprised if many teams have comparable size.
