Is SL similar to AP? The official IB explanation seems to be that IB classes are less broad and more deep, so SL is more about learning to be a good student than fulfilling expertise in the specific subject. And Maybe HL rounds out the expertise while also building  that "deep" approach.

(When I was in college the school made a fuss about how Gen Ed requirements were about  "approaches to knowledge", not merely "knowledge of different subjects", and classes in each department had to qualify for Gen Ed credit on that basis. An advanced class that didn't take care to teach the "approach to knowledge"  wouldn't count. 
That seems like the IB idea, too?  BTW my colleges  has since abandoned their fancy model of Gen Ed, and now do it the normal way.)

In broad terms, I might guess that if an IB SL student took an AP test, they'd find half the test very familiar and comfortable, and half the test unfamiliar; while an AP student would find the entire test familiar but overall less comfortable. [/quote]
