Me (South Asian): 40, 82k in state government. DH (white): 49, 165k at a non-profit I'm happy with where I'm at. I work from home, and have tons of flexibility. I could move back to the private sector and make way more, but wouldn't have the same phenomenal benefits package. Next year I will start earning 20 days of annual leave (right now I'm at 15). This is on top of 15 days of sick leave, 6 personal days, and 12 holidays (13 in an election year). The health insurance can not be topped (federal plans don't hold a candle to it from the comparisons I've done the few times I've considered to switching to the feds).
I earn much more in the private sector but I envy you a bit. Life is not a race...and the turtle really does win the race as you are likely enjoying a more balanced life along the way and there a generous pension you can count on. Only state and local govts offer generous cradle to grave retirement plans these days...but not sure for how long. You are wise to stay grounded with the long term approach to life. Good for you!
