This is determined by location, not by where one's vehicle is registered. Most of the insane drivers I see in Alexandria have MD plates, coming over via the WWB. 90% of the drivers on Rt. 1 are Maryland drivers.
VA has been accusing the MD drivers of being the bad drivers for so long that they actually believe it even though those stats are years old. New stats show that VA drivers have become more consumed by road rage and are more violent drivers now. But they don't believe in the change. When I am on the beltway and in MD, a lot of the really crazy drivers have VA plates. So you may see crazy drivers in VA with MD plates, but on our side of the river we se a lot of crazy drivers with VA plates. It seems to be that the ones that drive further distances and sit in traffic more hours of the day are the ones that are the crazy drivers. I live near Ft Mead and since the BRAC realignment a few years ago, we see a ton of VA plates for people who didn't want to move and just commute up here. The crazy ones that don't pay attention to the exits and try to exit from 1, 2 or even 3 (yes, I saw one that did cross 3 lanes of traffic at over 60 mph to "make" an exit and nearly caused a multi-vehicle pile-up) are VA drivers. The ones that cut people off or close ranks to prevent people from zipper merging? VA drivers. The ones that run red lights? VA drivers.
