I got my check a week or two ago. Filled out the W4 during the last week of school, so basically took all summer break to cut the check.
we have to pay taxes on this? Wtf
… all income is taxed, even settlements from lawsuits (a few types withstanding). In addition to being a legal necessity, the W-4 also adds an added layer of protection from fraud. Lots of folks started producing some pretty interesting receipts and financial restitution requests once they heard compensation was in play. Asking people to fill in IRS documentation does tend to make the grifters think twice/get cold feet.
Oh please, are you implying parents of disabled children are making fake receipts for fake therapy? That's ridiculous.
Yes. There are bad/greedy people out there, there are people who have children with IEPs. Being one doesn’t automatically exclude you from possibly being the other. FFX county is one of the largest counties in the country, it serves a massive SpEd population, it seems to reason that you might have some bad faith actors in a potential pot of literal thousands (And to be clear, to qualify a student simply needed to have been receiving services at some point between March 2020 and June 2022). I would think that fellow parents of children with disabilities wouldn’t mind having literally the bare minimum (like legally required) gate checks to prevent financial exploitation of a system they stand to benefit from. FCPS doesn’t have a money printing machine, if grifters had unfettered access it’d hurt deserving families in some way. Might be shocking but in my experience if you talk to teachers you’d find at least one story per school if someone attempting to get financially compensated for something wild. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fictional, but there’s been a lot of stretching of truth or seeking compensation for things that were existing before the pandemic. Just so we’re clear, while you’re thinking of maybe basic OT therapy, some families are asking for full tuition reimbursements fir tens of thousands or compensation for Au Pairs or extremely expensive supports like equine therapy for kids that don’t have any documentation to support ever needing that. Some families have tried double dipping by asking for compensation for different kids but the same services. So yes, I’m sorry to shatter your illusion of your community, lots of people saw this as a money grab opportunity.
