But even then, that story obviously resonated with certain schools but not with others. And of course so much is luck when acceptance rates are &lt;6%.
For this reason, I recommend applying to a lot of schools - it did seem based on the results from his school that &quot;reasonable shotgunning&quot; works (applying to ~15-20 schools). His strategy was also to apply to 2 safety/targets he knew he'd be happy to go to, and then go big on all the rest. (versus having a more 'balanced' list).

Also - keep in mind recommendations - the one part of the application we don't see and therefore can't reasonably assess across students. 
I surmise that these play a huge role in differentiating the sea of kids with top stats. And also help paint the picture of the type of student that particular school is looking for.
