I'll be the Debbie Downer here - flip flops are terrible for you. My PT admits she wears them too, but they are really bad for your feet.
My doctor said to have flip flops with good support by my bed so my arch doesn't get pulled when I wake up. Walking miles in flip flops bad, using them for short periods of time or when you are not walking a lot is fine, if it has good support. Birkenstocks DO NOT HAVE GOOD SUPPORT.
And some, including some podiatrists would vehemently disagree with you. Perhaps the key is to chose shoes that support your particular feet well. For some of us, such shoes will include at least some Birkenstocks.
