I agree it's frustrating, but I don't think doctors hold open a bunch of appointments in case this happens, so I don't know how they would "give you priority."
When a doctor cancels last minute, those patients should be moved to the top of the cancellation waitlist or doc should be fitting in one extra patient at the end of the day for a while. A 3 month wait isn’t reasonable for the doctor’s last minute cancellations.
Doctor here, and I agree. When I had a private practice, I kept open slots for emergencies and sometimes came in early or stayed late. Now, I am employed by a university . My schedule is micromanaged to the point that I am told how many new patients I need to see each week and how many I need to discharge from my clinic to return to their PCP for ongoing care. I’m not allowed to keep more than a few slots a week available for emergencies. I can see some people before or after my clinic hours, but I won’t be compensated for my time (even though the patient still pays the hospital), so I only do this when people are sick and need to be seen. So, people like the OP do get pushed to the back of the line. It’s really frustrating. I’m sorry this is happening to you, OP.
