My MIL does this too and it does drive me crazy. DH told me to lower my expectations and think of it as her talking to herself. The sad thing is that it makes it pretty much impossible to get close to her, even though she wants to be close, because every time I share something, she doesn’t respond in a kind/empathetic way and instead talks about herself or someone she knows in a tangential way.
