I'm so glad you asked this question! I am a new hire also and was wondering the same thing! I was told in the offer I accepted that my start date would be August 14 and I am moving to the area from out of state the week of August 7 (the week of the summer institute). They need to specify if this is mandatory and whether it is paid. If I am a teaching coming to the state with multiple years of prior experience, do I just need to e-mail my principal to clarify?[/quote]

You are an experienced teacher so you know how it goes.  Do not email the principal asking if it’s mandatory. You will get a canned answer saying new teachers should attend because that is what they are forced to say.

Instead, email saying you are moving to the area the week before your contract starts on 8/14.  Ask if it would be possible to come to the school to see your room and get keys the Friday before, if you even want to do this.  [/quote]
