Human trafficking absolutely is an issue in our world today. But fear-mongering is a bigger problem. The issue with the film’s protagonist is that his organization has greatly exaggerated their outreach. Ballard has also built his own net worth based on the fears of a niche audience through book deals, speaking engagements, and a couple questionable nonprofits. I haven’t seen the film myself. If it’s presented as a fictional account, I have no problem with it. But if people are watching it and assuming it all actually happened, that’s bad.
I’m a retired HSI special agent and agree with this assessment 100%. I managed a public safety team for years and although human trafficking is an “issue,” I think it has been very much exaggerated. Tim raised something like $50mm for his company; I would love to see his books and records as to where the money went and what he took home for pay. He claims they were involved in all these worldwide investigations/operations and recoveries, yet I know it is virtually impossible for a private entity/NGO to accomplish much, if anything without the cooperation of law enforcement (who likely aren’t that welcoming). I also know that he leans MAGA so he likely exaggerates and very much the spotlight and patting himself on the back.
