My mom’s diamond necklace and credit cards were stolen after an in-home aide stayed with her. Disgusting that these people steal from vulnerable elderly.
The best thing is for us all to give away these things before long term care. Caregivers are paid terribly and yes we had quite a few take things. Lawyers and accountants are paid quite well and yet they had no problem meeting with lonely mom as she was loosing it so she could mostly vent about everyone and apparently discuss changing the will about 100 times. One of my kids has a disability too and let me tell you, people absolutely do take advantage of the disabled. Enjoy the good fortune of not being disabled while you can, but plan for disability. My own mother loved to play games and try to manipulate with money and her jewels. Her golden child convinced her not to get a dementia evaluation and then went to town taking her stuff. Whatever was left over went to relatives coming out the woodwork with sob stories, her best friends the lawyer and the accountant, caregivers, etc. The queen of manipulation got manipulated left and right.
