There was no gun in the schools. A kid gave a presentation to his Lang Lit class on a problem in society (gun violence) and the kid's solution (give everyone a gun). There were lots of finger gun motions. The schools sent a cryptic message to parents of kids in that one class. One of the parents posted about it on Falls Church City Parents and used the kid's full name, which is how word of the presentation spread far and wide. The moderator of FCC Parents deleted the post right away, but I'm sure plenty of people saw it or forwarded it. The schools are doing ????. A friend with a kid in the class hasn't received any updates from the schools after the initial vague email. Business as usual in FCC!
Why would a kid be disciplined in this instance (completion of an assignment) and why would a community clamor for one? Look, I don't agree with it, but "arm everyone" is an actual argument that some advance as a solution. This is a school student -- I don't really have a problem with a student advancing this as a solution to a problem, assuming there is some kind of discussion and proper analysis of it in the assignment (to arrive at the conclusion) and hopefully in class -- the student is made to defend it. Not any different than defending a solution to another problem. None of us were there, so maybe if it was a veiled threat, that's another story. But honestly, I'm struggling to understand the foul here. And I'm a major proponent of gun control.
FCC had become a place now where many are intolerant of any opposing views. It’s many in the community and in the schools. That’s why people think anyone supporting arming citizens should be punished and an email was sent out because a kid made finger motions. Schools are so worried they could be perceived anything but extremely to the left because nothing else is accepted in this community. That’s why this overreaction of an email was sent.
Pp here. What a load of horseshit. This has nothing to do with “intolerance.” Now, if an adult started prattling on about arm everyone, I would eviscerate them with debate. That isn’t “intolerance.” That’s just my intellectual superiority. But a school student? It’s a thought exercise. Arming everyone is probably the dumbest solution every conceived for the problem of gun violence, but a student needs to be given the leeway to make the argument and learn from the counter arguments. You are most likely confusing misplaced concern about an implied threat with “intolerance.” But you probably also sound like one of these conservatives who think they are being persecuted for expressing invalid viewpoints, and think they have a gotcha for saying liberals are hypocrites for refusing to tolerate their intolerance.
