Only on DCUM is there such hate for people who may or may not be spiritual and do not belong to a particular faith community. In the real world, no one cares. Here, there are a couple of particularly vicious anti-atheist trolls, just as there are a couple of vicious anti-Catholic trolls and some generally anti-religion trolls. Trolls, your mistake is thinking that one example of a different belief system (atheism is also a belief system) means everyone of that community is the same way. Also: We are surrounded by belief systems. Collectively in the US, for example, most of us believe in democracy. Yet it is an entirely artificial construct, we need to all believe in it for it to work. Not like gravity: if you denied gravity, you'd still be controlled by it. But if you cease to believe in god/gods, or capitalism, or any of the constructs humankind has created... you can still live as homo sapiens somewhere, governed by the laws of nature. So this stupid fight that some trolls try to create, atheism versus religion, is entirely ridiculous. These are ALL artificial constructs anyway. You are all in your respective corners, fighting about something made-up.
Atheism is not a belief system, just as asymptomatic is not a disease.
Also the artificial constructs, as you call them, of atheism and religion, cause a lot of trouble, irrespective of the fact that they are artificial.
I don't think anyone but you called religion and atheism "artificial constructs". Religion, broadly speaking, is a brief system. Atheism is not a belief system. It is the lack of a belief system; the lack of theism.
DP OK that (position that atheism is not a belief system) is the position of the Atheist International Allaince but I believe the truth is much more nuanced and non black and white. For the record, I am not proselytizing for any particular belief system although I am religious. In a literal sense your contention that has been oft repeated in this forum may be true - “Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities.” (Wikipedia) But atheism is an ideology and does guide non believers in understanding reality … “What counts as a belief system? A belief system is an ideology or set of principles that helps us to interpret our everyday reality.“ (https://study.com/academy/lesson/belief-systems-definition-types-quiz.html) This article captures some of the nuances from an atheist’s perspective Faith of the faithless: Is atheism just another religion? The taunt that atheism is religious thinking in disguise undermines its claim to be a better way to run the world. The truth is more complex than you might imagine By Graham Lawton 11 April 2017 https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg23431212-800-faith-of-the-faithless-is-atheism-just-another-religion/ That said, we need to find ways to peacefully live together and allow safe spaces for different belief systems/ non belief systems - as long as they do not perpetuate hate or harm to others.
