Unclear. But, since it only occurs once a decade, DCPS is going to be thinking long-term at the boundary reassessment. I expect they will this round be looking for ways to better integrate schools where that geographically makes sense.
They didn’t really do that last time. They caved to political pressure from the rich parents who go to Bancroft, Shepherd, etc.
There was no middle school that was closer for Shepherd. Assigning to New North middle (that wasn’t open yet or even location chosen) would have eventually been to Wells and as you can see, Wells is already at capacity. Conversely, Deal is now under capacity and trending down. As is JR beginning in the fall.
Under-original-capacity or just fewer students than recent years with lots of trailers and crowding?
Without trailers, Deal is at 101.9% capacity. With trailers, Deal is at 84.9% capacity. At that’s 2021-22 enrollment, I heard it dropped even lower in 2022-23. In comparison, Wells is at permanent 94% and increasing each year. Hardy is at 64%. CHEC is at 111%. Roosevelt is at 137% capacity. Why do people continue harping about Deal being at 101% when CHEC and Roosevelt are even more over-crowded? In conclusion, Deal should either be left alone or at worst, a Deal feeder needs to be moved to Hardy/MacArthur.
