I'm not sure they put in that much effort? All the main performances except Viola Davis felt pretty lazy to me. Damon and Affleck, in particular, are just kind of skating by on their existing goodwill and letting the wigs/costumes (and in Damon's case, his paunch) do the work. The soundtrack felt like someone said "Hey, remember how much Boomers liked the Forrest Gump soundtrack? That, but for Gen X, and a much less ambitious movie." Like the music didn't feel like it was thoughtfully applied to scenes based on how well it suited them. It was just a playlist that they randomly assigned to different parts of the movie. That article was interesting but actually kind of backs up the theory that the music is just a playlist of songs they liked and not super thoughtfully put together, since it started with a literal playlist Affleck gave her. And then also it sounds like often their first or second choice was not available or couldn't clear, so they would go to an alternate and were just looking for something from the era that worked. Also, stuff like "We played Time After Time when Sonny is waiting to hear back from the Jordans" is really on the nose.

It's just an approach to adding soundtrack that feels kind of cheap to me.[/quote]
