I think this view of Trump is pretty democrat-centric and can be used to explain the total s-show that was the Trump/CNN townhall. The townhall was everything a democrat would want to say/ask of Trump and nothing a Republican would be interested in to help decide between Trump and another candidate. It let Trump put on a show--precisely what CNN wanted, and the audience loved. But for a primary voter who is undecided, it didn't do... anything. It illuminated nothing that is of interest to actual R primary voters apart from being entertained by Trump vs Liberal Media. And I think that part of it is that the left is incapable of understanding the motivations and concerns of Republican voters, so they couldn't assemble a list of questions R voters would actually have for Trump if they tried. But part of it is that everyone loves the Trump show, the left included, so they really just wanted him to get on stage and do his thing.
Been hearing this since 2015 and I don't think it's a lack of understanding, it's that there aren't any clear, understandable motivations of Republican voters. What would you suggest Trump be asked about that was different than the questions posed.
