Hello, We are considering a move from Howard County to Frederick. We're mostly looking in the Monrovia (Landsdale community) or New Market, Ijamsville areas. I am hoping someone on here may live in the area and can share your experiences with the schools. Many think we're silly for leaving HoCo but I'm looking for a different vibe for our family and we're quickly getting priced out of SFH here. I'm trying to do as much research as possible before we make a decision. We're looking for good schools. I'm not looking for best of the best. I want my children to be in a supportive environment where teachers care about them. I understand this area may not be as diverse as Howard County but we're looking for a school and community where people are accepting of all types of people. I read a prior post about someone saying she would never send her child to Green Valley ES or Windsor Knolls because her AA child wouldn't be accepted. Is that true of this area or is that just one poster's feelings? If you have children in the schools in these areas, how do you like them? I'd love to know what you DON'T like about the schools too. Thank you for any information you can share.
We are a family of color living in New Market for 3 years. The Lake Linganore area has a few traces of racism but they are overwhelmingly drowned out by liberals who are welcoming of all. I have some of the loveliest neighbors! Urbana and my area are ideal choices but north into the county can range from unpredictable to undesirable. Urbana and Oakdale schools are good choices BUT they are very crowded. I don’t know how that compares to Howard County but you can gauge that from FCPS website data. Good luck with your search!
Thanks for sharing this! We are a family of color that is moving to the LL area. Its nice to know that your family is having a good experience there!
Be aware that Linganore HS in my opinion is not a good place for black students. Racism is still very well alive there and the black kids don't feel like they have a voice. There are staff who don't know how to teach students from diverse backgrounds and some are even helping perpetuate racism. I say this as someone who was going to move there but heard horror stories from multiple families. They all hope it will get better in time, as one of the feeder elementary schools is more diverse, but if like me, you have a HS kid or one in a few years, I would not risk it.
I'm the poster you are responding to....I have heard the stories about Linganore HS. We are zoned for Oakdale HS which seems to be a little more diverse.
Agree. Oakdale and Urbana are the 2 FCPS high schools I would feel comfortable sending my kids to.
