I had a 2006 Volvo V70 once that the engine seized at 155,000 miles.
It had plenty of oil and was serviced regularly.
Engine replacement (from junk yard) was going to run close to 9K.

155K isn't high mileage.  And the poster didn't say how old the car was when it happened. This lines up with the other posters comments about the years when Volvo was owned by Ford.  
I've been impressed when riding in my friend's Volvo, not sure the model but it's only a couple of years old, one of the smaller sporty models.  We were sitting in it watching our kids play soccer on a freezing windy day and stayed warm in her car the entire time without having to turn the car on - I would have needed to run the heater in my Toyota to stay warm on a day like that.[/quote]
