It was for an internship, but a pretty selective one with good pay. We had a first choice, but their references took forever (red flag), they took a long time to respond to emails, and they eventually bailed out. Candidate #2 politely followed up with me every two weeks, and I was stuck making excuses, but when candidate #1 dropped out I hired him so fast and he was a great hire. His persistence paid off.
