This is due to the hubris of thinking that we could conquer nature and build huge cities and conduct industrial agriculture in an ecosystem that could not sustain it long-term. And yes, these areas have suffered from periodic and severe droughts for thousands of years. It was never a good idea to settle there.[/quote]
