Newbie here, and I’m trying to understand the complaints about Charles Allen. He’s a council member, not the police commissioner or the mayor. Why are people acting like he is solely responsible for this and other incidents of violent crime?
. He is the face of the crime reform bill- not the part that 90% of people can agree up (updating etc), but the nonsense allowing misdemeanors a jury trial, not making car jacking a separate crime, etc. Please look this up from multiple sources so you can form your opinion. In my opinion, these “extras” were a nonstarter. He has pushed defunding the police, and and has repeatedly been on the side of criminals on every issue. Right now, despite a double homicide rolling gun battle his Twitter is silent on this huge horrific crime. I would suggest contacting him and speaking to his people. They are clowns. We had one of his deputies come and talk to us about major problems we were having (deliberately not sharing because I hear she’s petty and vindictive) and she was totally out of touch, didn’t even introduce herself to us, and generally sat there uselessly while neighbor after neighbor explained how we needed help on this issue. To me, it seems abundantly clear that the only thing Charles is seeking is a national profile for himself. He doesn’t worry or concern himself about the issues really impacting his constituents, but you BETTER BELIEVE he is quick with a photo op and a cute Twitter caption talking about “hands off dc”. And again- two people dead, a rolling gun battle in the streets and Charles is sitting on his hands again. His team’s Twitter is full of tweets talking about how we need to defund the police and push this ridiculous crime bill. He is totally Out of touch and using ward 6 as a platform for himself.
It sounds like you are describing someone who has executive authority. Charles Allen does not. He is a legislator, and can't do anytihng without a Council majority. He can't do anything opposed by the Mayor without a two thirds majority. I understand disagreeing with him, but the scorn and blame as if he is the sole reason for this - while acting as if the Mayor and the Police Chief have no agency - makes no sense.
Oh come on. He represents Ward 6. He can be blamed.
Sure, he bears some responsibility. But do you people not know how city government works??
People know how city government works. I understand he does not control the police department. However, I live in his ward, two blocks from this shooting, and three peopel were shot and two are dead and countless shots fired at 9pm on a Sunday, a time when it is not unusual for use to be out walking the dog or walking home from the Roost after dinner. This is a public safety issue and he hasn't even said a word about it. His most recent tweet is about a water main break. Crime on the Hill has gotten worse in recent years and he is just silent on it, and when he does talk about crime he talks exclusively about reducing the number of cops, reducing sentences, reducing enforcement against minors. I'm liberal and I don't necessarily even disagree with his positions on all of those things. But also -- he's a local politician who doesn't seem to care about the impact that a double murder in his ward has on his constituents. Like he's more worried about me avoiding flooding from a water main than responding to this event. It's really frustrating. I don't like Bowser either, for what it's worth, and trust me -- I noticed she's not doing anything about this either. But Allen is supposed to represent the interests of Ward 6 even when Bowser doesn't. I don't feel like he does.
When the cops know that not even the local council member seems to support their work, it can be demoralizing.
