The irony is that his bit about not fighting back when Will slapped him because he was taught not to fight in front of white people is that he waited to fight back by staying silent for a year until Netflix paid him to fight back using his comedy to take Smith and his wife down for a largely white Netflix audience.

That’s why the lead in to the special features Bono singing a silly song and upwards of a hundred comics and Hollywood celebs praising Chris: to show they have his back. This takedown was a year in the making and perfectly timed with awards season.

I have always enjoyed Rock’s comedy even if it sometimes shifts from raw truth about big issues to raunchy bits that sound like what most black comics do. I liked the Meghan Markle bit. I liked the first 20 minutes of the set. But once he pivoted to his family and ended with the Smith set I felt like he is a deeply insecure man. The pussy set was really low brow and beneath him. I bet his insecurities stem from being short and realizing he will never be as comedically brilliant as Chappelle.

Curious what the smith’s pr machine will do. Curious if people will criticize rock for his takedown. I honestly think he trotted out as many celebs as he could precisely to demonstrate a show of support in the hope that Hollywood won’t defend Smith following the Netflix takedown.
