The worst is to put the money in and then say "I just can't take it anymore" and take it out when it's down, and then see that it goes back up again and then decide "Oh, I really should be in the market" and buy it when it's high. But if you don't take risks, you'll lose out to inflation. So decide a percentage of your portfolio--maybe it's only 20% for you if you're that conservative that you're going to have in the market, and just dollar cost average it in and then keep adding to it--maybe on auto-pay so you don't have to think about it.
