By all means, ask your neighbors.  We also did that  and we found that people would speak in vague positive generalities.  We never heard the nightmare stories until we went to school there and grew to be friends with people.  Then, in friendship people would share their troubles and tips about teachers to try to avoid.  Also, it was generally only the parents of second graders who had enough experience with the school to be able to speak about pros and cons. [/quote]
