Anyone else just get the email about Black History Month spirit week at BCCHS? I understand the intention. I wonder about the implementation. As we enter the last full week of Black History Month, please join us in our Spirit Week. For Pan African Colors Day on Tuesday, weave some red, black, and green into your outfit, or wear African clothing. On Wednesday, for Decades Day, celebrate any decade, honoring Black culture and style. Thursday is Character Day. Choose a Black character from your favorite TV show or dress as an important Black Historical figure. For Blackout on Friday, wear all black, if you can. Remember, this week is to honor and celebrate Black history and culture. If you have any questions about what this means so that you are respectful and appropriate, please talk it over with a staff member. Thank you for participating.
Even if we assume every single teen is exercising maximum good judgement and impulse control, there are still so many ways for this to go wrong. On Tuesday, some kid shows up in a kanga (Great Lakes region of Africa) + a Moroccan national team football jersey. Does this imply that she does not understand that Africa is made up of diverse identities? On Wednesday, someone turns up in a lovely dress suit, pillbox hat, and white gloves from the 1950s. Does this imply that she prefers a time when African Americans didn't have the vote? On Thursday, someone turns up as Tubbs from Miami Vice. But wait. It's controversial because Tubbs is morally ambiguous - is he saying that all Black cops are dirty? There are just so many ways for this to go badly, and in a school where Black students already feel othered. Why does it have to be a dress-up week?
