I’m another D who thinks the D messaging on this is not great. I think they are afraid to say anything so the defund voice just sits there and looks like the voice of the Dems. I think we need more cops but also better compensated, better trained, and more accountability. The truth is that in every job, a lsignificant percent of people just aren’t very good at their job. It’s true of lawyers, doctors, baristas, cleaners, etc. with coos, that fact is way more problematic. One of the biggest problems is the “us versus them” mentality that causes cops to close ranks around their colleagues even when they know those colleagues aren’t very good. We need a culture shift for that to change. And I think criminally prosecuting police for things like pursuing someone who is breaking the law and endangering people is not going to help. The guys in Memphis should definitely be criminal prosecutors. But the guys in DC pursuing the motorbike rider? Fire them, but I think criminally prosecuting them sends the wrong message to officers that remain.
Agree. Cops need to be better trained. And they need to stop with the mentality of being judge, jury and executioner. Their job is to arrest perpetrators and to only resort to force when there is a clear and present danger. We also need to better train and hold accountable the prosecutors and judges.
