Omg - that is so cheap.
I can't believe how inexpensive all the groups are and the fact that registration includes caps and a suit. They are probably the most inexpensive club in the DC area. Do they fundraise a lot or does the county pay a lot of it.
The pricing is so low because of it’s affiliation with the county and their exclusive use of county operated pools.
Last year there wasn't a suit included. The one that was included this year, IMO, is not as good(quality/fit) as the "team" suit we bought last year. The "free" caps are flimsy, most opt to pay for the better quality ones and personalize them w/ their names on the sides but both are adequate options if are watching your budget. All the registration/payment is done through the Montgomery County Department of Recreation so I guess there's some sort of contract/agreement between the club and the county which I imagine includes cheaper rates for pool time which I'm guessing accounts for most of the difference in the lower cost.
They get to use the county pools for free. The county also handles a lot of the admin for free. This is why they are cheaper than the other clubs.
From their website: RMSC currently has over 80 coaches working with more than 1700 swimmers at 5 sites. RMSC is operated as a joint program between the City of Rockville and Montgomery County Recreation (MCR). Each of the RMSC sites offers a full program for competitive swimmers at every level from mini-team through national caliber. Our sites are located throughout Montgomery County in Rockville, Silver Spring, Bethesda, Olney, and Germantown. I get the sense that it's essentially a county offering or a county-RMSC co-operative offering so there likely an agreement/MOU between the two.
City of Rockville heavily subsidizes their pool/program and that location is far cheaper than other locations and more competitive. It is between RMSC, City of Rockville and the county. Other pools are just RMSC and the county. County and city handle registration and other things. They get pool time for free. So, some of the high costs don't make sense when it's just the coaches and overhead. Kids provide their own equipment. Our group has 60 kids in it.
Where are the high costs you are talking about? Even the highest group is a third of what another club would price it at. Coaches are expensive. All club swimmers provide their own equipment.
It does not matter what other clubs charge as it is not comparable. You are basically paying for coaching and sone overhead. Our group has 60 or so kids with 6-9 kids per lane. Very little real coaching.
For the posters thinking why wouldn’t you go to RMSC given the prices, the above is the drawback to it being affordable. The groups are large, there are way too many kids per lane, and if your kid isn’t a standout they will get lost in the shuffle.
That is true at pretty much all clubs.
