There was a rape in APS in January??
OP, that's a grave allegation. Source?
The lady in the video clear says there was a rape in APS in January and that they want more transparency on these kinds of issues... as the only reason the public knew about it is because a parent decided to speak out about it. I have not heard about this, nor has it been discussed AEM. Nor has APS spoken out to say that was untrue.
That’s not quite what she said. What she said was that in January there had been six incidents of drugs and/violence in APS school, including a rape and a mob assault, but only one of those events was being discussed that evening because a parent came forward publicly. That last part is about the Wakefield student who died of an overdose. I am not denying that a rape or a mob assault occurred, but to my knowledge there is no public information to substantiate either of those allegations.
The mob assault was reported on ArlNow. Kenmore students beating a Hamm student.
Thank you for the correction. For some reason that article did not come up when I did a search on “assault” on ArlNow. The fact of that article undermines her point a bit, though, because her argument was that APS hadn’t communicated with the community about those other incidents when the ArlNow article reflects that APS did communicate with families. As for the rape, it actually really bothers me that she would use that as a grounds to attack the board. When a student is sexually assaulted, that student’s privacy should be given the utmost respect. Even communicating hat an incident occurred without naming names threatens to violate the victim’s privacy in this context.
https://www.arlnow.com/2023/01/25/police-investigating-after-student-attacked-by-group-outside-of-kenmore-middle-school/ Both the mob assault, and the overdose last week were first made public by Arlington now because folks in the community monitor the police scanners/tip off. It’s not because APS made an announcement.
You think less than 24 hours is an unreasonable time for APS to learn of an incident that occurred after school hours, do a preliminary investigation to understand what happened, and then draft a message to the school community?
Not at all. I was responding to PP saying the articles weaken the stance that APS has not been forthcoming. In my opinion there’s a huge difference in waiting until an appropriate time to report based on information and investigations versus never saying anything at all.
But in both instances APS did make statements relatively shortly after the incidents occurred. The fact that ArlNow reported it first based on police scanner communications does not mean APS would not have made a statement but for ArlNow’s reporting, not does it mean that APS was wrong to take less than 24 hours to ensure it was communicating accurate information and that it was legally allowed to share that information.
The important thing getting missed is what is not being reported at all, which is what the speaker at the school board with talking about.
The important thing you are missing is that students have privacy rights. You are not the center of universe and are not entitled to know everyone else’s business.
No one is asking for a violation of privacy. Such a red herring. Just admit you are ok with rapists and abusers in your child's school.
