Because Norway had a poverty level agrarian and fishing based  economy rather than its current  oil based economy.  Your great grandparents missed Norway’s economic boom and came here as poverty stricken refugees and the US welcomed them as they have always done.

Norway is now wealthy enough to welcome refugees like you  and those from Pakistan, Somalia, Eritrea, Iraq, Poland, and Syria.  As you know, there has always been extensive discrimination  against the native Sammi and that is extended to the middle eastern and African refugees
As a Norwegian descendant you will not face that discrimination, particularly as you and your family speak Norwegian
Be aware that there is a high level of domestic violence in Norway and mental health issues, particularly in the winter.

Norway is less consumer  driven because prices for basics such as food are high and incomes are low.  Your weekends will be spent cross country skiing in the winter and at parks in the summer.  None of these have a cost.
