It's called anosognosia and it is common in people with dementia and people with mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It's not denial - it's a lack of insight. A person can be told by their medical provider that they have dementia, but the part of the brain that would process the information is no longer working as it should. So the person insists that there is nothing wrong with them, which makes it much more difficult to get them to accept help. My mom is a perfect example.
